Even ear piercing and nose piercing can be
therapeutical. Nose piercing is traditionally done on
a specific marma (Indian energy point) that links to
the genital area, balancing menstrual cycles and
tonifying fertility. So it seems that 'modifying' the
body with intelligent intent can aid in many levels of
health and perhaps Self-realization.

FYI

    Ashwin,
that is another very interesting pint. I remember Dr Lad talking about piercing certain spots in order to stimulate a certain Marma point and how that teh spot on teh earlobe that most women use is basically neutral. He also mentioned a spot on teh upper part of the ear used to stimulate alertness in people tending towards spaciness. Several years after I heard these things the piercing fad started. I began to wonder what effects people piercing various body areas would have and in my naivete I also at first assumed that the people doing thsi were involved in some sort of esoteric practice to primarily stimulate sexual areas but that tehre was some understanding of it. I later realized that it was simply jewelry at that point my interest was lost as I realized that it was nothing more than a variation on another hairstyle for most people and soon was not even confined to the more radical and adventurous among us but that it seemed that almost every teenaged girl got her tongue or
nipple pierced as soon as she was old enough to.
Certainly kechari was developed with a MUCH greater understanding of energy flows and marma points than the random piercings that many do today with random energetic effects.
