Beginning with Chakras, Seeing forehead aura?
« on: July 16, 2009, 04:15:33 PM »
Hi, This is my first post on the forum!

I am just getting started with meditation, which I have always had trouble with in the past with my eyes closed because of my lack of focus and discipline to do meditation...so I am meditating in front of a mirror now because I am more focused with a visual guide of sorts, and by that I mean, observing myself in the mirror.

About four years ago while gazing at myself in the mirror I saw a dark glob of 'light' or aura, whatever you wish to call it covering my entire forehead while staring around my nose. I thought nothing of it then.

Now I sit close to the mirror and gaze at my nose, lips, or throat, and I readily see this dark glob cover my entire forehead...coming and going, and lasting for about three seconds maximum. It looks like I am wearing a dark helmet basically.

After doing this for a couple days, I now see the same dark aura covering my lips in the shape of something like a circle.

Staring between my heart and throat, I see this visual cover my entire face in my peripheral vision.

Is this the third eye opening? I am glad I found this forum and I am open to learn many new things. Is this an optical illusion? Have I started to discover my own chakras? Any thoughts, tips, guides would be much appreciated.

I'm realizing the visual element could potentially be a distraction...I think I am going to get started with an a guide with an overview of the basics of meditation. How is that advanced Yoga Practices book for beginners, and does it cover chakras and kundalini? I have looked at some reviews, but I want to know if this is a good starting point or reference before I spend $30 on the book.

Hi Vamana and welcome to the forums.

You don't need to buy the AYP books to get started with the AYP Deep Meditation practice.  The lessons are free here on the AYPsite.  The lessons start here: http://www.aypsite.com/plus/10.html and the Deep Meditation lesson is here: http://www.aypsite.com/plus/13.html ....

The AYP system doesn't deal directly with the chakras....Yogani calls that stuff "under the hood" of the car while we need only really be concerned with driving.  We use a universal purification system (Spinal Breathing Pranayama) that focuses on the sushumna nadi which works on all the chakras the same (other then the crown chakra which we leave alone until we are well established in the rest of our practices).  AYP does deal with kundalini though.  You will read about that as you get into the lessons.

Hope this helps.

Love,
Carson[^]

Thanks for your response. I will use the lessons and apply them. I am a little afraid of attempting 'kundalini'. Already while meditating in front of a mirror I got brief vertigo for about a second. This is something I have not ever experienced.

Welcome to the forums Vamana,
No need to be afraid of kundalini. Meditation is by far the most important practice. You can leave kundalini stuff for much later.
I don't think it is a good idea to meditate in front of a mirror. If you must stare at something, pick an inanimate object to begin with. But it is best to practice with your eyes closed, and work on staying awake.
Make sure you are in a sitting position, not lying down as that will make you sleep.
